AniCare Child gives clear, step-by-step advice on
how to assess and treat young people who abuse animals. It
was created by experts in the field who have worked to determine
the most effective methods of treatment.
The book contains an introduction, which explains that addressing
childhood animal abuse is vital because it often precedes
further acts of violence and/or is symptomatic of family violence.
The book’s second section includes information on how
to effectively assess the situation, factors to consider when
determining the severity of the problem, and additional disorders
that are often associated with children who abuse animals.
The third and largest section of the book addresses specific
methods that can be used to treat animal abusers. This section
explains how to establish a nurturing relationship with the
child; describes the importance of helping the child learn
how to identify, express, and regulate his or her feelings;
and provides a variety of specific, therapeutic exercises
that can be used to develop the skills that the child needs
to improve his or her behavior. Numerous case studies show
the reader how to successfully implement the exercises.
Because parents play a huge role in shaping the behavior of
their children, the last section of the book explains how
parents can help their children develop positive social behaviors.
The book also includes an extensive reference list and an
appendix with assessment and treatment information.
Suggested Uses: AniCare Child is
perfect for school counselors and social workers. Educators,
librarians, and other professionals who work with children
and families can also benefit from the assessment section.
Parents may use the “Working With Parents” section
to learn how to better promote positive behaviors in their
own children.
Counselors who also work with adults may be interested in
the version that is suitable for clients over the age of 18,
The
AniCare Model of Treatment for Animal Abuse.
