Encourage Animal-Friendly Wardrobes
Encourage Animal-Friendly Wardrobes
When students see fashionable pairs of shoes, coats, sweaters, or hats, they rarely think about what they're made of. What many people don't realize is that each year, billions of animals—including cows, pigs, seals, sheep, goats, alligators, snakes, raccoons, minks, foxes, chinchillas, rabbits, beavers, hamsters, and, in some countries, even dogs and cats—are killed for their skin or fur.
Get Your Students Involved
The best way to get your students involved in helping to end the abuse of animals used for their skins—while also teaching them about doing good in other ways—is to participate in PETA's fur-coat donation program. Over the years, PETA has received more than 10,000 fur coats from people who found out about the abuses that animals killed for fur endure and who chose to get rid of all fur and fur-trimmed items in their wardrobes. PETA gives the donated furs to the homeless—the only people who have an excuse to wear fur—and offers them to shelters to be used as bedding for orphaned animals.
Encourage your students to hold a fur-coat donation drive, which can educate others at your school about animals used for clothing! Have students hang up posters encouraging their families and other students to give up fur, fur-trimmed items, and leather and to sign a pledge stating that they will never wear animal skins in the future. Mail the pledges and the furs that you collect to the following address:

Fur-Free Prom!
Another great way to get students involved is to ask them to make their upcoming formal dances fur-free. Whether they're attending a ring dance, prom, homecoming, or a formal, students want to be seen in their finest outfits.
Everyone wants to look his or her best for school dances, and compassion can make young women's and men's beauty radiate even more. As the saying goes, it's what's on the inside that counts. By declaring their biggest social affair of the year fur-free, students can prove that you can have the "look that kills" without killing animals.
Rewarding Students
It's important to reward students' positive actions for animals—so please keep us updated on your students' work. We'll give every school that holds a fur-free event, gets students to pledge not to wear animal skins, or collects fur coats for the homeless an award, and we'll also send along a package for your students!
