The Benefits of Humane Education

Reduces Violence
Youth who are violent to animals rarely stop there! Violent acts toward animals have long been recognized as indicators of a dangerous psychopathy that does not confine itself to animals. Many of the young high-school shooters tortured animals before they turned on their peers. Teaching students to have empathy for other beings is indeed essential to raising kind, compassionate citizens.

Builds Moral Character
Compassion and empathy are, for the most part, learned behaviors. Humane education helps to awaken empathy. Through issues and activities, students learn to identify and understand the suffering of others. If we can affect students early on in their lives and help them develop strong ethics, then perhaps they will continue to make ethical decisions throughout the rest of their lives.

Creates Responsible and Caring Citizens
Humane education helps students examine the motives and ideas behind their behaviors and choices. Once students understand the ramifications of their actions and how their choices can cause suffering to animals, they are prompted to think about all their choices and how they affect the world.

Empowers Youth to Make a Difference
One of the most important things that humane education does is to teach its students to be the solution, to live in such a way that they are not contributing to the problems of the world, but rather making the world a better place with their compassionate consumer choices.

Cultivates Empathy for Animals
Humane education enhances students' understanding that animals are living, feeling beings to be treated with respect and compassion. It helps students understand how humans' regard for animals has changed and evolved through social movements for animal protection, which is becoming one of the leading causes in the world today.
