Objectives
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to do the following:
    • Appreciate the life and writings of celebrated author Alice Walker
    • Learn about new perspectives and diverse views through the characters in Alice Walker’s essay “Am I Blue?”
    • Explore the issue of cross-species communication
    • Understand the concept, limitations, and pitfalls of anthropomorphism
    • Understand the link between our treatment of people and our treatment of other animals
Materials
Alice Walker’s essay “Am I Blue?” can be found in her book Living the Word: Selected Writings, 1973-1987 and in the January/February 1989 edition of the Utne Reader.
