Insect Collection

Students can and do learn about animal behavior, anatomy, and "hands-on" science without capturing animals or caging them in a classroom. Killing animals for educational purposes-even tiny or disliked animals, such as insects-sends a harmful message to students. It teaches them to devalue the lives and needs of others and implies that class projects and grades are more important than the lives of the creatures who are killled. Worse, these destructive messages are amplified because students see that their teacher and school sanction the activity as normal and worthy.

A more respectful understanding of animals can be encouraged by quietly observing them in their natural surroundings through nature walks on school grounds or a field trip to a wildlife sanctuary.
