Respond to Reports of Animal Abuse

KittenViolent criminals often have histories that include childhood incidents of cruelty to animals. Following every recent school shooting, authorities learned that the perpetrators had abused, tortured, and killed animals before moving on to human victims. In fact, the FBI uses reports of animal cruelty in analyzing the threat potential of suspected and known violent criminals.

Teachers, parents, and students have been asked and trained to look out for the warning signs. Humane education is the way to reach these children before they ever harm an animal. Children who learn empathy and the importance of considering the lives of others grow up to be peaceful members of the community.

Of course, not every child who abuses an animal will grow up to be a serial killer. But every time a child kicks a dog or beats a cat and gets away with it, the behavior is reinforced. These children will be more likely to grow up to kick their children or beat their spouses.

If you are concerned that a child is showing signs of aggressive behavior toward animals, be sure to bring it to the attention of administrators as soon as possible.
