Humane Dissection for Your School

Enrollment is now open for this year’s TeachKind Science pilot program for teachers who would like to take an effective, ethical, and economical approach to teaching life science by using tools such as digital dissection software and synthetic, hands-on models. Our program incorporates high-quality learning resources that engage students and align with the Next Generation Science Standards for free to qualifying teachers.

If you, your school, or your school district commit to replacing animal dissection with humane methods, TeachKind Science will be delighted to partner with you on this exciting pilot program!

Honestly it was the most positive dissection experience I’ve had in my 13 years of teaching. Nearly 100% of my students were smiling, actively engaged, and asking great questions. I have not had that kind of engagement before! (Not to mention the fact that so many students were grateful that they didn’t have to dissect a real animal!)

– A Wisconsin high school teacher who received Kind Frogs and a paper dissection donation

After exploring engaging animal-free resources like the Kind Frogs, I’m happy to leave traditional dissections behind. These alternatives are humane, cost-effective, and just as—if not more—effective for student learning. Plus, they spare students from outdated practices and exposure to unpleasant (and potentially harmful) chemicals. It feels like a win for students, teachers, animals, and budgets alike.

– A Canadian high school teacher who received Kind Frogs and paper dissection donations

The kids really enjoyed this activity. As an educator who grew up with traditional animal dissections in the classroom (and always being troubled by them), I welcomed this alternative into my classroom. It was just as much of an educational experience for the kids, if not more. We weren’t having to deal with kids acting “grossed out,” getting queasy, or dealing with unpleasant odors. We got to be 100% focused on the lessons and the learning.

– A Nevada GATE teacher who received Kind Frog donations

This experience has genuinely shifted my teaching practices toward more humane approaches in science, and I hope that through my enthusiasm and professional reach, I can help motivate and inspire fellow educators to explore these practices as well.

The app allows students to completely understand the internal biology of the frog and use the same dissection tools as they would in a lab to simulate the dissection process. We are very grateful to [Teach Kind] for your generous contribution. The students absolutely love the alternative way of learning. With this application the students are able to perform repetition of the dissection …. You have my students’ and my deepest appreciation, and I want you to know that the impact of your donation extends far into the lives of my students.

– A Georgia middle school teacher who received a virtual dissection donation

I wanted to check in and let you know that the dissection software and computers have been fantastic! We have been working through the invertebrates, and the kids are learning so much more from the virtual software—and we are saving animals! It’s been great.

Educators and administrators who are concerned about the issues associated with dissecting millions of animals each year in anatomy and biology lessons are challenging this controversial practice. These issues include cruelty to animals perpetrated by dissection-supply companies, the health hazards of exposing students to animal cadavers soaked in carcinogenic preservatives, the squandering of limited funds on repeat purchases of dead animals, and the likelihood of deterring students (especially girls) from pursuing careers in science due to their ethical objections to dissecting animals.

By participating in TeachKind’s dissection pilot program, you can help tackle these challenges and be part of a groundbreaking effort to modernize science education.

The pilot program is designed to quantify educational efficacy and the views of students and educators on using humane, non-animal teaching methods (e.g., Kind Frog, digital dissection, virtual reality tools, and anatomical models).

Schools that choose to participate will receive humane dissection tools for free and will be provided with standardized evaluation surveys for students and teachers to complete.
